The Monthly Mix

Halloween Soirée Style

It’s time for spooky, scary ghouls and ghosts! Halloween is a fun time to dress up and throw a party. One of my favorite things to do each season is decorate my home and bar cart accordingly. October is especially a favorite since it is a Halloween themed one! I’m sharing some ideas to spook up your home for a soiree.

My Drift

Go Pink or Go Home … I generally try to keep things light in this space. You won’t often come across anything of real consequence here; my goal is to make you chuckle or roll your eyes. This month is an exception. I need your close attention because this is important. … October is Breast Cancer Awareness month. I always try to use the month to heighten awareness, which is why I wear my breast cancer awareness bracelets every day.

Happiness Is Homemade

Walking up to the front door of Joe and Dr. Cheryl Saul-Sehy’s Mid-Century Modern house, you can see their taste is eclectic, inviting and curated. On the front stoop, you are greeted by a black woven fixture they call “The Giant Eyelash;” it is a fixture that was acquired by mistake, but one they both now love. This is just one example of the Saul-Sehys’ open approach to their remodel. They found a balance between asserting their own style while ultimately trusting the professionals around them. … Inside are rich, worn beams on either side of the front entry hall.

Publisher's Letter

This is a season I look forward to every year because it comes with a break from the heat, and yes, my friends, football season is finally here in full force. I know I am not alone in saying the seven long months between Super Bowl Sunday in February and the beginning of September without football are like spending time on the dark side of the moon. I truly think I function at full capacity during football season. … Football season is a way of life at our house. We love flag, fantasy, college, professional and any other kind of football equally.

Bougie Grubs

Hello, my name is Angela Evans. … Let me introduce you to my alter ego, Bougie Grubs! What is Bougie Grubs, you may ask? … Bougie Grub started with my love of food and the ability to make people feel special with my dishes. As a working mom, time was limited, and my opportunities to make these beautiful dishes were few and far between. So, I began my effort to create dishes and desserts that would only take me 30 minutes to prepare, but would look like it took me all day! What I didn’t know was this “fun pursuit” would become a necessity.

The Perfect Homecoming Look

What makes the perfect homecoming look? There are so many factors that go into creating the perfect look for homecoming, or really any special occasion. Homecoming 2021 style is a mixture of sequins, beading, asymmetrical necklines, neon colors and even stars! This year is also characterized by the simple, more traditional looks that we have seen in past years, such as lace and the classic little black dress. Truth be told, anything goes this season! Homecoming 2021 is a matter of personal style!

Polka Dots, a Chevy... and Forever

In February 1950, twenty-one-year-old James Stanley was walking out of the movie theater when he first saw Donna June Beck from afar. The two were separated by a crowd of people, but when she met his gaze, both claim to have been immediately interested in the other.

S.O.A.R.ing Back to School

Each year, as August ends and September rolls around, people everywhere re-acclimate to the flow of school. As the future college students at Texas A&M University-Texarkana planned and made their way to campus, faculty, staff, and student leaders prepared to welcome them through the Student Orientation, Advising, and Registration (S.O.A.R.) program. Through S.O.A.R., incoming freshmen and their parents are welcomed on campus for a fun-filled and informative crash course in college life!

House on a Hill

Walking the halls of the most beautiful homes in Texarkana is awe-inspiring. But hearing the stories of the families who daily walk those halls is truly inspirational. For Kelli and Jeff Phillips, their ranch-style home on 50 acres is a magnificent sight to see. Rolling hills, beautiful views out every window and the peaceful setting of country living, minutes from the conveniences of town, embody the space they now call their forever home. … Their story begins like most: “We met at Legends Gym,” Jeff said cunningly. “Every day she would come in and start her little workout.
