Talk Tuesday

A Gift for Jesus

As we celebrated the Christmas season, Ms. Laurie's class was mindful of the reason for this very special time of year: The birth of Jesus. The greatest gift is the gift of love from God for all of us. Jesus is a gift for us and since it is his birthday, Ms. Laurie asked her students what gift they would give Jesus.

Are You My Book Twin?

I read a book last week that felt so personal to me. The words and phrases were so similar to what I've written in past book reviews that I worried mine could be misconstrued as plagiarism. In I'd Rather Be Reading by Anne Bogel (of Modern Mrs. Darcy), she writes at length about our reading lives and the joy of finding a book twin (someone who enjoys all the same books as you).

Let Your Light Shine

In Ms. Jessica’s class, we are learning what it means to “let your light shine.” We learned that Jesus calls us to let our light shine before others. In Matthew 5, he says, “Let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” We learned that when we follow Jesus, obeying his word and sharing his love with others, we are letting our light shine.

Diabetes: My Story

If I’m being honest, I didn’t know November was National Diabetes Awareness Month until Texarkana Magazine asked me to write about our experience with the disease. To my family and me, Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is a part of our everyday life, so we don’t think about one particular month to be aware of it. We’re always aware of it. … Prior to March 14, 2022, I wasn’t always aware of T1D. I saw Ali Deal post a few times about her experience with her son, but I never thought her experience would apply to my child.

Our Place Changed Our Lives

November is a time of gratitude, a month where we pause to appreciate some of the most important unsung heroes among us—family caregivers. Most of these devoted individuals quietly shoulder emotional, physical, and financial burdens to ensure the well-being of their loved ones enduring a health journey. Two caregivers, Jean Phillips and Harriet Hopkins, share the blessing of finding the Alzheimer's Alliance Tri-State Area and Our Place Day Respite Center and how it changed their lives.

Home for the Holidays (kind of)

My siblings like to say my parents really started spoiling me after they left for college. I’m still not convinced I didn’t get the worse end of the whole birth order deal. James, Sophia, and I (in that order) are spaced out perfectly. With a little less than two years between each of us, we’ve spent most of our collective lives in the same collective stage–with the same neighborhood friends, involved in the same sports leagues or teams, and a part of the same youth group.
