Renaissance Man

NEGATIVITY by Michael Ulmer
When we think about a Renaissance man, most of us think of those great men of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, whose brilliant plays and poetry we’ve studied in books and whose breathtaking works of art we’ve seen on chapel ceilings. Centuries later though, right here in the year 2020, you still occasionally run across those rare individuals who seem to become an expert at every task they set their hands to.

A Sarine Thought… or Two

Thanksgiving, Traditions, and the LikeNOVEMBER. A thirty-day month full of gratitude, joy and, for some, appropriately timed Christmas shopping. For me and my family, this month marks the beginning of a fairly complete transition to cooler weather, celebrating a wedding anniversary with my stud of a husband, continuing to watch PG and A&M football, being able to wear my UGGS in public with less self-awareness and my favorite American celebration: THANKSGIVING! … Thanksgiving has become our favorite holiday spent with the whole family, and we are all refreshed once it is over.

Peace, Love & Gayble

On June 11, 2010, my world came crashing down. … The unexpected happened to my family, along with several other families in the surrounding area. I had always heard of horrible things happening to others, but I never imagined that my family would be a part of such a story. On that day, we lost Gayble, our seven-year-old spunky, fun, loving daughter, in an unexpected, horrific flood at Camp Albert Pike. … The first year after this devastating event occurred was nothing but a blur for me. I recall just trying to survive one day at a time.

Happy Voter Registration Day

LET'S VOTE!WHY VOTE? … Today, most American citizens over the age of 18 are eligible to vote in federal and state elections, but it has not always been so. The original Constitution, which defined our system of voting, was not specific about WHO could vote. This resulted in certain population groups, including African Americans and women, being excluded from voting rights until the late 1800s and early 1900s. The 15th Amendment was ratified in 1870 which allowed African American men to vote, and the voting rights act of 1965 removed other voting limitations for this group.

Recycling Done Right

The U.S. produces about 34.5 million tons of plastic waste each year; that’s enough to fill the Houston Astrodome 1,000 times! … German cosmonaut, Sigmund Jahn famously said, “Only when I saw the Earth from space, in all its ineffable beauty and fragility, did I realize that humankind’s most urgent task is to cherish and preserve it for future generations.” Despite these words of caution in 1978, destruction and pollution of the environment have continued at an alarming rate.

Everyone Needs To Be Counted In Their Hometown

Every decade for the last 230 years, the United States has counted its population. Doing so is a requirement spelled out by Article 1, Section 2 of the United States Constitution, which requires the participation of the general public. The census provides critical information used by lawmakers, teachers, business owners, and service providers to gauge the needs and well-being of our communities.
