Imagine living in a time when castles, knights and chivalrous romance were the norm-a place of kings, lords, vassals and peasants… the Middle Ages. … If travel to such a time was possible, Dr. Craig Nakashian would be the perfect tour guide. He is a medieval historian and professor at Texas A&M University-Texarkana. “I had always enjoyed history, but as a kid I was mostly into the U.S. Civil War, and later, World War II,” he explained. “When I was a senior in high school, my stepfather set up a meeting with one of the historians at Western New England University (then College).

No Shame Zoloft GameI got lost in a hotel when I was a little girl. In reality, it was probably only a few minutes, but that time of being separated from my family stamped me with anxiety with which I’ll likely always struggle. The racing heart, the light-headedness, the feeling of complete helplessness and lack of control over what is happening... It can be terrifying. But I’ve been on medication for years now and let me tell you, there ain’t no shame in my Zoloft game.

A Sarine Thought… or Two

The Life EquationMama always said, ‘Life is like a box of chocolates: you never know what you’re gonna get.’” —Forrest Gump … Ah, Forrest, there is such truth to your mother’s life observation. However, the more life I experience, the more I find it comes with a call to action and is not dependent on the luck of the draw like when choosing from the Godiva box. In fact, it seems to me to be downright mathematical.

A Place to be Together

“This is where we live,” Jill Flanagan said several times as we walked around her house. She loves that they enjoy spending time together, just living and making everyday memories as a family. Honestly, I’m not sure a higher compliment could be paid to the design or style of a home because ultimately that is the purpose of our houses… to live… to invite us in and make us comfortable. … The Flanagan home is welcoming from the moment you pull into the driveway until the moment you leave. The modern French Country style is composed of brick.

This is the month we get to celebrate our dads, not just for the roles they play, but for the men they really are. The importance and challenges of fatherhood can sometimes be overlooked. The role of the father in American society is constantly evolving. Traditionally, fathers have shouldered the cultural image of breadwinner, disciplinarian and authority figure. How often do you remember hearing your mother say, “Just wait until your father gets home!” to get you back on the right track?

Graci Henard stepped up to the 15th tee box of the 2020 Jay Brewer Memorial Lady Tiger Classic at Texarkana Country Club, down five strokes with four holes to play. After a 30-foot birdie on the 15th hole and a par on the 16th, Henard was still down three strokes with two holes to play. During this improbable comeback moment, she kept saying to herself (and out loud) “I want it more than her.

A Regional Opportunity … A year after the coronavirus pandemic first drove the U.S. economy into the deepest downturn in generations, there is a robust debate about how local communities can position themselves for a brighter future. At the City of Texarkana, Texas, we are fortunate to have survived the past year facing numerous disasters at once, and even more grateful to look ahead to what is in our bright future at such a time as this.

Tiger’s Blood, Bahama Mama, Silver Fox, Fuzzy Navel, White Lightning. Gifts for Him

Father’s Day IdeasI have a 10-month-old son, so this will be our first year to celebrate Father’s Day as parents. Dads like my husband deserve to be celebrated not just one day, but often! He’s a 50/50 partner in our parenting journey, and I am blown away every day by how amazing he is with our son. No amount of gifts could fully show our appreciation for him, but it is still fun to surprise him with things I know he will love. … Upgrade dad’s favorite summer activity by making him master of his own Big Green Egg!

Six things to do in June!F or me, the beginning of summer is also the beginning of something incredibly special and dear to my heart—half price milkshakes at Sonic! … My friends and I used to spend hot summer nights playing volleyball at Bringle Lake courts, then we would head down to Richmond Road Sonic to cool off with a chocolate shake. Needless to say, I always gain around 15 pounds during the summer, but I really don’t care.
