Make it Rein

Throughout history, cowboys have tended cattle beginning at sunrise and ended the day covered in dust from head to toe. The horses, though exhausted from the long day, would have gladly continued to ride the range. After a dinner around the campfire, cowboys and ranch hands longed for a hobby more entertaining than the monotony of the workday. … Putting their horsemanship to good use, these fun-loving cowboys invented their own kind of entertainment. They took the normal daily maneuvers of their horses and turned them into healthy competition.

Why did the chicken cross the road? This may be the beginning of a joke with a million different punchlines, but it really got me thinking about opportunities. We all face pivotal points in our lives, running around like chickens with our heads cut off, trying to cross to the other side without giant mistakes. What if the answer to “Why did the chicken cross the road?” was to graduate from college? What if the chicken crossed the road to start over in a new city or build a new business?

How can you not be romantic about baseball?" —Billy Beane, Moneyball … … Baseball has been a constant for more than a century of American history, and people have set their calendars using opening day as a guide.

Good Evening TXK

Nine years ago, a very wild, rambunctious 16-year-old me was sitting in Mrs. Jenny Walker’s communications classroom at Texas High School. I was rather obnoxious, dividing my classmates up between ‘royals’ and ‘peasants’ and making plans for how I would go about securing my own MTV reality show, entitled King Bailey of course, because what else would I title it? Through my loudest and lowest days, when I thought I was running the classroom, I can still firmly recall every hallway conversation with Mrs. Walker.

Tricks of the Trade

Someone once said, “The world is best viewed through the ears of a horse.” That may very well be true, but from the perspective of the sibling trick riding team of Claira (13), Wyatt (12), and Allie (10) Morris, the second best view comes from hanging upside down off the side of a horse running around a rodeo arena. … There is not a lot of mainstream attention paid to the sport of trick riding, but because of the glitz, high-adrenaline stunts, and, of course, danger to the rodeo crowd, it is a fan favorite.

I took a weekend trip with some of my closest friends to Dallas right before the pandemic hit hard in 2020. We were just four broke twenty-somethings foolishly wasting the last dimes of our paychecks, combining our pocket change for the cheapest hotel room we could find, all in the name of leaving town for a few days and wandering around a big city together. It was one of those trips where you want to leave assured that spontaneity can, in fact, be fun. Out of every random activity that weekend, the most fun thing we did was ride around downtown Dallas on Bird scooters for three hours.

Get in the Game

With the hazy days of winter behind us, the warm sunshine of spring inspires us to get outside and be active. For many children, staying active is a year-round lifestyle—both inside and outside of school. Whether it’s softball, volleyball, soccer, dance, or baseball, youth across America are participating in sports that require a great deal of dedication.

On March 3, 1931, President Herbert Hoover signed a law officially declaring “The Star Spangled Banner” our country’s national anthem. That’s how March 3rd officially became National Anthem Day—a day that observes not only our anthem, but the songs nations around the world have adopted and chosen to represent their national identity. I love that National Anthem Day isn’t just about our culture. It’s a true reflection of how music has this neat little way of bringing us all together.

A couple of months ago, I was standing in my mom’s bathroom talking to her while she was fixing her hair in the mirror, and she was just LAUGHING! I’m not talking about giggling—little chuckles here and there—I am saying uncontrollably laughing out loud while telling me about a little joke her boyfriend John made on their date the night before. She was laughing so hard that I was trying to hold back laughter myself even though I could not understand a single word she was saying because that’s how hard she was laughing.
