And so, They Built a House They Loved

Ashlyn and Austin Harvey are high school sweethearts that prove with hard work and perseverance, focus, and a little hustle, life might just lead you to a perfect black cabin in the woods. As newlyweds, they lived in a modest duplex and set their sights on saving money to build the perfect starter home. They set a goal and a budget and began looking for just the right place to call home. “We lived in a super-duper cheap duplex in Nash. And we pinched pennies for two or three years to save up enough to have a decent down payment,” Austin said. “We almost gave up even.

Spring Home Refresh

There is just something about the weather warming up and flowers blooming in spring that makes everything feel fresh and new! We often hear the phrase “spring cleaning.” It is a time when many people reorganize, clean and get rid of things around their homes. It is also a great time to give your home décor a refresh! You can take things you already have and move them into new places, add a few new pieces and you have a whole new mood to your space!

A Sarine Thought… or Two

Confessions of a Chronic LaugherOkay, I admit it. I’m a habitual laugher. I laugh a lot: at home, at work, at church, in public, in private, in groups and when by myself. I laugh at jokes, snide remarks, funny faces, weird noises and the occasional instance of someone falling down (but I totally stop if I can see they are injured). I am the person who, when texting “LOL,” is literally laughing out loud!

Publisher's Letter

This month we will celebrate George’s ninth birthday at our home. If you have ever met George, you cannot forget him. We lovingly refer to him as our Golden Retriever because he radiates happiness. He has an exuberant and bold personality. We just wrapped up basketball season and John Henry and I have been in his cheering section while Fred has been coaching the team. Short stature and broad shoulders are about all we can gift our children genetically, so George looks more like a linebacker than a basketball player. Although he may not score many points, George puts up a mean defense.

Masculine Modern

A tour of Bryan Callaway’s recently remodeled home is truly a reflection of his personal style. It is filled with pieces that are new and old. Some have been collected over the years, some given to him by past clients, and others were purchased through his business, Merchant House Interiors. Even with its modern nod, there is a welcoming warmth to the space and the feeling of a story ready to unfold. … The structure Callaway remodeled is not a typical house; his best guess is that it was actually built in the 1940s or 50s as a duplex with a communal kitchen and central staircase.

The Way it Was Meant To Be

Being a bride in the year 2020 was definitely unforgettable. As a young girl, you dream of having the most elaborate, beautiful wedding, with a great number of family and friends there to witness one of the most memorable days of your life. For us, that all drastically changed in a matter of months. … Our love story began in the summer of 2015. There was something about that southern drawl, and I just couldn’t steer myself away. I grew up in the city and loved the night life of Dallas and Fort Worth.

Finding Your Person

The debate lives on to this day. Did we meet at Chili’s, on State Line or at the bowling alley on a night out with friends? Neither of us can quite remember, but we know we were in each other’s lives before we even spoke. When our friends Ray and Joy Sandefur were married in 2016, we were both in attendance, dressed in coordinating colors as part of their bridal party. Will claims to have wanted to dance with me that night, but asked a mutual friend instead. I would never change our love story now, but looking back, I can’t help but wonder if our timeline could have happened much sooner.

Imperfect Perfection

Kentrell and I both attended school in Texarkana—he attended Texas High and I attended Liberty-Eylau. We met through mutual friends. When we first started communicating, he lost interest quickly because I was a firecracker and a wild child. He says I was doing way too much for him, and I laugh at this story all the time. We are completely different. He is very much an introvert and prefers to communicate with a smaller crowd of people. I am an extrovert.
