My dad, Jay Simmons, has always been a hard worker. When I was a little girl, I remember riding with him in the back of 18-wheelers to deliver trucks to clients over the weekend. I remember thinking the bed in the back for taking naps during the ride was the coolest. I also remember spending many Saturday mornings watching television in my dad’s office while he worked. (Do you remember that commercial showing the eggs in a frying pan?

Finding Forever

photos by Matt Cornelius
As a family of six, space and location were key factors when Sarah and Dr. Mike Wages were house shopping eight years ago. They eventually found the perfect-sized house just minutes from work and school, making it easy to overlook the dated decor to see the home’s potential. Sarah was also particularly drawn to the classic colonial architecture and the quiet cul-de-sac where she could easily envision the kids safely playing.

Potted PlanterTips … To encourage good drainage, use a rock or two to allow water to pass through the hole but not wash out the soil. … Don’t skimp on the soil. Good soil matters. … Read those plant tags while shopping. If they are planted together, they need to like the same light and watering cycle. … Feed your plants. Get a time release fertilizer. It makes your job easy! (Osmocote is my favorite). … Don’t forget to water! I like to water Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. It’s easy to remember.

End of Year Teacher Gifts … May is one of the busiest times of year for those with children in school. Proms, recitals, graduations, programs, and more all take place during this month. As the year draws to a close, it is also a great time to show appreciation to teachers who have had a hand in helping your child grow during the school year. I am sharing end of year gift ideas any teacher would love to receive.

A couple of months ago, I wrote about our new camper and the escapades that were on the horizon for the Meisenheimer family. The good news is that it all has gone well, and everyone is still intact after two weeks of camping adventures. … These outings are probably very different from what most would envision when using the word “camping.” For example, we had a water view and community bathrooms and showers, just like I did camping as a child.

Rodeo Style … The Four States Fair and Rodeo is in town, y’all! This is the perfect time to channel your inner Yellowstone. I love to style a good western outfit, and adding a cowboy hat or boots to a look is always a great way to accessorize. Here are a few that will help you saddle up and have a great time at the rodeo. … A gorgeous pair of white cowboy boots will truly go with everything. This color has been on trend the last few seasons, and it does not show signs of going anywhere soon. Available for $204 via Boot Barn … This button-up top is giving me all the western vibes with a twist.

A Sarine Thought… or Two

Why I Love EasterHappy Easter to one and all! This is such a special time of year to me personally because of my relationship with Jesus Christ. I usually allude to my faith each time I talk to you guys, but I have never really laid it all there, so to speak. That changes today! … I grew up in a Christian home from birth. I went to church, Sunday School, children’s choir, children’s mission organizations (shout out to all my fellow Girls in Action!), Vacation Bible School, camps, retreats... if it had to do with church, more than likely, my family was in attendance.

In 2015, I was invited by a friend to attend a Christian women’s conference I knew nothing about. The second annual IF Gathering in Austin, Texas, was being live streamed that year at Fellowship Bible Church in Texarkana. I had originally planned to be on a girls’ trip that weekend, but my heart was stirred to skip it and to check out this gathering instead. Attendance has been a priority in my life every year since. … IF was unlike any event I had attended before, and I was unsure what to expect.

Reviving the Past

The newly renovated Potter & Marks Law Firm building has been a part of Texarkana’s history since the early 1900s. … From the research Josh Potter has done, he learned that his family’s ties to the building date back to the 1940s or 1950s when his grandmother worked for a business located in the building. In 1997, his father, Charles Potter, bought the building along with his law partners at the time and set up an office for the Arnold and Arnold law firm.

Seven Attributes for SuccessSuccess consists of going from failure to failure without loss of enthusiasm.” —Winston Churchill … “Fail faster to succeed sooner” similarly describes the effort required to succeed and reinforces that failure is an integral part of success. I always found that to be accurate and realistic, yet also motivating. It’s a reminder to dig in and keep trying. We often think success happens overnight, like some kind of luck.
