Doubling up at Olympics: Texarkana’s Roberson is Paris Games alternate

Texarkana native gymnast Joscelyn Roberson mirrors her idol growing up, Simone Biles. Both stand 4-foot-8 and weigh 104 pounds. And both are in Paris for the Summer Olympic Games. Biles heads the five-woman U.S. Olympic team, and Roberson was named a traveling alternate, so she is on the U.S. sideline and able to compete if needed. Roberson is the second athlete from Texarkana to compete in the Olympics. Jarrion Lawson, a Liberty-Eylau all-state track and field champion and former University of Arkansas All-American, competes in his second Olympic Games. The 30-year-old is entered in the men’s jump after leaping 8.18 meters (26-10 feet) at the U.S. trials in Eugene, Oregon. He placed fourth in the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Biles, the reigning world champion, will become the fourth American woman gymnast to compete in three Olympic Games after placing first in the all-around competition at the U.S. trials in Minneapolis. “She’s (Biles) just insane. All the stuff that she can do and make it look so effortless,” Roberson said of the U.S. team captain. The four-time Olympic gold medalist finished with an overall score of 117.225. Suni Lee came in second with a score of 111.675, and Jordan Chiles in third with 111.425. The 27-year-old Biles, who became the most decorated gymnast ever at last year’s world championships, clinched an automatic spot on the Olympic team after placing first.

Lee, Chiles, Jade Carey, and 16-year-old Hezly Rivera join Biles on the U.S. women’s gymnastics team. Roberson and Leanne Wong were named the traveling replacement athletes. Roberson, 18, who will be a freshman at the University of Arkansas this fall, is eligible to compete in any gymnastic Olympic event, especially if one of the top five members is injured or cannot compete for any reason. Roberson placed sixth in the all-around competition with a cumulative score of 110.975. Rivera was fifth with a 111.150 score. Roberson and Rivera tied for top honors in the balance beam, both sporting 27.975 scores.

Here are the top 10 finishers in all-around women’s gymnastics: 1. Simone Biles — 117.225; 2. Suni Lee — 111.675; 3. Jordan Chiles — 111.425; 4. Jade Carey — 111.35; 5. Hezly Rivera — 111.15.; 6. Joscelyn Roberson — 110.975; 7. Leanne Wong — 110.425; 8. Tiana Sumanasekera — 109.559. 9. Kaliya Lincoln — 109.4; 10. Simone Rose — 105.2. Roberson’s ties to Texarkana keep coming to light. Both her parents, father Jeff Roberson of Texarkana and mother Ashley Roberson of Spring, Texas, near Houston, are Liberty-Eylau graduates. Jeff, 39, who also attended Texas A&M-Texarkana, has worked 20-plus years at Red River Army Depot. Roberson is a hybrid version of her mom and dad — Jeffrey is the sports guy (who played baseball) and gave his daughter her love for sports. Ashley is a pharmaceutical chemist who instilled a love of science and education into her daughter. Roberson is part of the gifted and talented program at school, and it shows in her gymnastics, such as taking responsibility for her deductions from judges. This will help later on when she may need to make game-time decisions during routines about construction. Since she’s such a natural competitor, it’s no wonder that she’s a crowd favorite, especially on the floor exercise where the fans always get excited to see her. The feisty competitor tries to get the crowd pumped up with exaggerated arm gestures. “I definitely feel it when I’m near the end of my floor routine and getting tired and I hear it. I just zone out and let all the people who are super excited for me just cheer me on, fuel me through the rest of the routine, and it’s just really amazing,” Roberson told an Olympic magazine. “And then when I finally finish my final tumbling pass, it’s just so awesome to hear the crowd cheer.” The crowd broke into a raucous and lengthy cheer when Roberson was announced as a traveling Olympic alternate. Roberson didn’t know what her future held after Sunday night.“That really made me feel appreciated by the fans,” Roberson said. “The U.S. team was really hard to make this year because of all the extremely talented individuals. This is probably the strongest U.S. team we’ve had in many, many years.” Roberson’s journey in gymnastics is backed by a deeply supportive family, each playing a unique role in her success. Her parents and siblings, Jami and Jackson, are her biggest fans and cheerleaders, Roberson said. In Texarkana, where the biggest sports talk of the town is what team is going to state in football or baseball, Roberson is not well-known. People just don’t know a lot about the sport, which usually gets national attention for the biggest events such as the national and world championships and the Olympics. It’s another situation entirely inside the gym, with Roberson as the pioneer for gymnastics in the state of Texas — everyone knows her name and looks up to the rising young star. It hasn’t always been smooth sailing. Things took an unexpected turn in September 2022 when her mother accepted a new job in Spring and gave her daughter a choice. She could move with her and find a new gym in the powerhouse gymnastics city or stay in Texarkana with her dad and older siblings, which would likely mean the end of her elite career. The choice was obvious, if painful. “I didn’t really want to go,” Roberson says of her move to Spring, where she would join World Champions Centre, the renowned gym run by Biles’ parents, Nellie and Ron, and be coached by Biles’ Hall of Fame coaches, Cecile and Laurent Landi. “I was so scared.” The move boosted her career, Roberson said. “I was in a rut, and my confidence was shot,” Roberson told reporters at a news conference in 2023. “I was mentally struggling because I was working so hard in the gym, and nothing was paying off.” A year later, Roberson’s career has blossomed. “The coaches at the World Champions Centre helped rebuild my confidence, and they showed me how I could improve,” Roberson said. “They taught me to believe in myself again.” The Robersons have strived to keep their daughter grounded, balancing her gymnastics success with normal kid duties such as doing the dishes. “She might be an Olympian one day, but today, she’s still going to take out the trash,” her mother joked. Her parents have emphasized the importance of family unity, body positivity, and normalcy. These include striking a balance between her rigorous training gymnastics schedule and attending advanced virtual high school classes online. She just graduated this year and is looking forward to competing for the Razorbacks. “I’m excited about getting a full-ride scholarship to Arkansas,” she said, “but right now, my mind is focused on the Paris Olympics.” Moreover, the Robersons emphasize the importance of supporting their daughter’s mental well-being as ardently as her physical health. Don’t let her physical stature fool you because Roberson has already hit the big time financially. Two national sports magazines, including The Sporting News, estimate Roberson’s net worth between $1 million and $5 million after the 2023 season. That estimated total reflects her commitment, dedication, and exceptional talent as a gymnast, according to the Sporting News. She is a social media phenom as well, with a following of 53.7 thousand followers on Instagram alone. The teenager also makes additional income through promoting products. Roberson loves reading, playing games, and spending time with her Pomeranian dog, Rocky. She revealed that she had taught him how to sit, wait, lay down, roll over, paw, and close her bedroom door on command. Although she was not named to the U.S. Olympic team, she is an alternate who is a member of the national team. She came up one spot below her ultimate goal. “I always dreamed of only doing one Olympics,” Roberson said. Paris was where she suffered a severe knee ligament tear eight months ago; now, she is cheering on her teammates in the Summer Games. “I’ll be rooting for and encouraging my teammates on the sidelines,” Roberson said. “It all seems surreal, but it’s going to be great and a lot of fun. “And I can’t wait to see the Eiffel Tower.” Joscelyn Roberson Gymnastics Career National Results U.S. Gymnastic trials for 2024 Paris Games.
