Wassail is the perfect holiday tradition, filling your home with the warm, inviting aroma of apple and cinnamon. It’s an ideal drink for a chilly day, whether you are gathered around the table for Thanksgiving or sipping it on Christmas morning. This recipe strikes a perfect balance—not too sweet, with just the right blend of flavors. Once used in orchard blessings, wassail has evolved into a cherished part of Thanksgiving and Christmas celebrations, making it an essential addition to any holiday gathering.
INGREDIENTS
- 1 gallon of apple cider
- 1 orange
- 1 apple
- 10 whole cloves
- 1 teaspoon of ground nutmeg
- 1 teaspoon of ground ginger
- 1 cup of brandy (optional)
- Cinnamon sticks, apple slices, and rosemary for garnish
INSTRUCTIONS
- Pour the apple cider into a large pot and warm over medium heat.
- While the cider is heating, take the orange and apple and stud them with the whole cloves.
- Add the clove-studded fruit, ground nutmeg, and ground ginger to the pot.
- Allow the mixture to simmer for about 15 minutes.
- Remove from heat and stir in the brandy (if using).
- Ladle the hot wassail into mugs and garnish.
