Wassail is the perfect holiday tradition, filling your home with the warm, inviting aroma of apple and cinnamon. It’s an ideal drink for a chilly day, whether you are gathered around the table for Thanksgiving or sipping it on Christmas morning. This recipe strikes a perfect balance—not too sweet, with just the right blend of flavors. Once used in orchard blessings, wassail has evolved into a cherished part of Thanksgiving and Christmas celebrations, making it an essential addition to any holiday gathering.

INGREDIENTS

  • 1 gallon of apple cider
  • 1 orange
  • 1 apple
  • 10 whole cloves
  • 1 teaspoon of ground nutmeg
  • 1 teaspoon of ground ginger
  • 1 cup of brandy (optional)
  • Cinnamon sticks, apple slices, and rosemary for garnish

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Pour the apple cider into a large pot and warm over medium heat.
  2. While the cider is heating, take the orange and apple and stud them with the whole cloves.
  3. Add the clove-studded fruit, ground nutmeg, and ground ginger to the pot.
  4. Allow the mixture to simmer for about 15 minutes.
  5. Remove from heat and stir in the brandy (if using).
  6. Ladle the hot wassail into mugs and garnish.
